Dangerous goods fulfilment is order fulfilment for products classified as hazardous for storage or transport under regulations such as ADR (road), IATA (air) and IMDG (sea) — including lithium batteries, aerosols, flammable liquids, corrosives and many cosmetics, paints and cleaning products. It differs from standard fulfilment because the goods can only be legally held in storage approved for their hazard class and quantity, must be packed in UN-approved packaging with the correct classification marks and documentation, and can only travel with carriers cleared to carry that class. A dangerous-goods 3PL holds the relevant licences and trains staff on handling, so a merchant can sell regulated products without operating a compliant warehouse themselves. If a product has a hazard symbol or a UN number, or ships with a battery, it usually needs dangerous-goods handling rather than standard fulfilment.
Why can't a normal 3PL just ship my hazardous products?
Because storage and transport of hazardous goods are regulated. A standard warehouse is not licensed to hold them beyond tiny quantities, standard couriers refuse them, and non-compliant packaging or paperwork makes a shipment illegal to move. A dangerous-goods partner holds the storage approvals, uses UN-approved packaging and documentation, and ships on cleared carriers.
How are lithium batteries handled?
Lithium batteries are one of the most common regulated items in ecommerce and have their own rules depending on whether they ship alone, inside a device, or packed with one, and by transport mode.
