Fulfilment centre vs warehouse which one you need
Storing stock and shipping orders are two different jobs. Here is how to tell which model your business needs before you sign anything.
The difference
Less storing, more shipping
The two look similar from outside, but they are built for different work. A warehouse optimises for holding goods; a fulfilment centre optimises for getting individual orders out the door. Which you need depends on what your business actually does with the stock.
A warehouse holds
Its job is storage: goods in bulk, often for longer periods, moving in and out in larger consignments. It is measured on space, cost per pallet and inventory accuracy, not on how fast a single order ships.
A fulfilment centre ships
Its job is outbound flow: picking, packing and dispatching individual customer orders continuously. It is measured on speed and accuracy per order, and it integrates with your store to do it.
Which model fits your business
- 01
You move stock in bulk
You ship pallets or large consignments to retailers, distributors or your own stores rather than single parcels to consumers.
- 02
You hold stock for a while
Your need is space and safe storage over time, with occasional larger outbound movements rather than a constant stream of orders.
- 03
Speed per order is not the point
Success is measured on cost per pallet and inventory accuracy, not on how fast an individual order reaches a customer.
- 01
You ship to consumers
You sell online and need individual orders picked, packed and dispatched continuously, with tracking back to your store.
- 02
Speed and accuracy decide it
Your customers judge you on delivery time and getting the right item, so per-order performance is what matters.
- 03
You need integrations and extras
You want a genuine store connection, returns handling, and in Europe often VAT/IOSS and cash on delivery.

What is the difference between a fulfilment centre and a warehouse?
A warehouse is built for storage: it holds goods, often in bulk and for longer periods, and moves them in larger consignments, so it is measured on space, cost and inventory accuracy. A fulfilment centre is built for outbound order flow: it picks, packs and dispatches individual customer orders continuously and integrates with the merchant's store, so it is measured on speed and accuracy per order. Many providers do both from one site, so the practical question is not which building it is but which capability you are buying and how good the provider is at it.
Also called: warehousing vs fulfilment, storage vs fulfilment, 3PL vs warehouse
Common questions
Is a fulfilment centre just a warehouse that ships orders?
In a sense, but the operating model is genuinely different. A warehouse is optimised to store goods efficiently; a fulfilment centre is optimised to get individual orders out fast and accurately, which drives different layout, staffing, systems and store integration. A building can do both, but being good at storage does not automatically make a provider good at order fulfilment.
Can one provider give me both storage and fulfilment?
Often yes. Many 3PLs offer bulk storage and order fulfilment from the same site, which suits businesses that hold reserve stock and also ship to consumers. Confirm the provider is strong at the capability that matters most to you rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Does the cost differ between the two?
The pricing shape differs. Warehousing leans on storage cost per pallet or bin over time; fulfilment adds per-order pick and pack fees and carrier costs on top of storage. Compare on how you actually use the space and how many orders you ship, not on a single headline rate.
I sell online. Which do I need?
Almost always a fulfilment centre, because your work is shipping individual orders to consumers quickly and accurately. You might additionally use bulk storage for reserve stock, but the capability that decides your customer experience is order fulfilment.
